9 March 2019, The Bronco Invite

The second meet of the season for the Islander Track was the Bronco Invite at Rancho Bernardo High School. It's still early in the season and Bronco's a little hard to qualify for so we took just a handful of athletes. Our only double winner of the day was Ruthie Grant-Williams who won both the 100-meter hurdles and the high jump. She also placed fourth in the long jump. Her 100 hurdle time was 15.78, her high jump mark was 5 feet 4 inches, and her long jump was 16 feet 9 inch. That's a nice set of early season marks. Our other winner was Teresa Perez, who took the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18.60 followed by Sofia Van Arsdale who placed third with a time of 2:20.95. The Hundley sisters ran the 1600 with Madden clocking 5:20.78 for seventh place and Abigail running 5:30.02 for the 14th spot. The two sisters then teamed-up with Van Arsdale and Perez to place second in a very closely contested Distance Medley Relay (DMR). It looked like Van Arsdale, running the 1600 meter anchor leg, would reel-in the Rancho Bernardo Anchor, but the RB girl had a bit too much of a lead as we placed 2nd by six-tenths of a second with a time of 13:13.27.  In the throws, Victoria Perez had time for the shot put only and threw 33 feet 5.5 inches for 7th place against some stiff competition.  Our State Champ long jumper, Alysah Hickey, wasn't at this meet because she was competing at the New Balance National Indoor Championships held at the Armory in New York where she long-jumped 19 feet 6.75 inches for seventh place. It's worthy of note that all of the girls mentioned above are school record holders. Hickey holds the record for the long jump, 100 dash, 200 dash, and as a member of the 4x100 record team. Grant-Williams holds the 100 hurdle record and was on the 4x100 team. Teresa Perez holds all the distance records: 800, 1600, 3200, 3-mile, as well as the record for the DMR. Van Arsdale and the Hundley sisters are on the record-breaking DMR team. Victoria Perez holds both the shot put and discus records.
For the boys contingent, we took our best long distance runner and best sprinter.
Brad Busby persevered in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:08.22 for 14th place. Nicholas Dunn sped to a time of 11.69 for 10th place.
