We had our
last regular season cluster meet with Mission Bay and Madison last Thursday.
The girls won their matchups by the scores of 75 to 33 against Madison, and 80
to 50 against Mission Bay. The boys beat Madison 63-45 and lost to Mission Bay
by the score of 67-49. When I mention a finish place below, I'm referring to
the overall finish against both teams. For scoring, we use the finish place
against each of the other teams. Last fall, at the "Raising of the
Banners" ceremony, a girl came up to me and said that she was coming out
for track and was going to break a couple of school records. There's nothing
shy about Victoria Perez, and when I checked out her sophomore season online,
her shot put PR was, indeed, better than our school record, but her Discus PR
was about a foot and a half short. I've been the head track coach at Coronado
for over two decades, but the discus record was set in 1980 before I started
coaching here. Back then, I'd run with the guys on the team and was sort of an unofficial distance coach. I did
know the girl and her family who set that record, Moe Carr. Not only did Moe
throw she was also on the cross country team. That's unusual. Back then, we had
discus facility where the softball field is now located to use for practice.
Now, there is no room. We have to improvise. John Downey, a former decathlete,
and pole-vaulter is a great asset to our team as a voluntary coach. He can
fill-in wherever we need a coach, and we desperately needed a throws coach this
season. He rose to the task and has done a great job with the throwers. The
shot put ring is next to the track along sixth street. To practice the discus,
we'll throw from the shot put ring to the field at times where there are no other teams practicing. The problem
with this is the discus ring is larger than the shot put ring. To simulate the
discus ring, we draw circles on the rubber surface behind the goal post and,
again, throw into the field. Moe's old mark was 118 feet 5 inches; Victoria
threw 119 feet 2 inches. The old shot put record of 32-11 was set by Kara Solem
in 2002; Victoria threw 33-9.
Alysah
Hickey, the section high jump and long jump leader, opted out of the high jump
to concentrate on the long jump and soared out to 19 feet 1 inch. There has been
only one other jump this season over 19 in San Diego, and that was also by
Alysah at the Mt. Carmel Field and Distance meet where she jumped 19-5.25.
Ruthie Grant-Williams placed second with 16-11 followed by Brianna Finnegan
(15-2), Laura Wiese (14-5), and Regina Czerewko (14-2). Regina also placed
second in the triple jump with 28-8. Ruthie and Laura went 1-2 in the high jump
with 5-2 and 4-8 respectively. Ruthies' mark was a PR and ties her for 2nd
place in the county with Torrey Pine's Jade Cany. Alysah leads the county with
5-10. In the 100 hurdles, Ruthie won in 15.78 with Laura placing fifth. The top
two female 100 meter sprinters in the county this season are Alysah and
Madison's Aysha Shaeed. The two went head-to-head with Alysha winning in 11.94
to Shaeed's time of 12.24. Madison Shanks placed third with 13.02. Daniella
Rassvetaieff won the open heat of the 100 with a time of 14.37. The wind was
pretty strong down the backstretch which favored the sprinters but hindered the
distance runners. Teresa Perez wanted to better her recently acquired school
record time of 5:03.67 and perhaps join the three girls who have gone under
five minutes this season. The wind was just too strong and she ran 5:10.
Natalya Gomez placed third in that race.
Teresa also won the 800 in 2:20.74, followed by Sofia Van Arsdale in
2:22.66 in second, Annie Holland in third with 2:36.50, and Gomez in fourth.
After the 800 Teresa entered the 200 for a bit of speed work and placed third
behind Shaeed and Elaina Thompson from Madison with a time of 27.14. Holland
was fifth with 29.50 and Rassvetaieff eighth in 32.04. The girls went 1-2-3 in
the 3200 with Madden Hundley winning in 11:37.54 followed by Abigail Hundley in
12:08.92, and Jessica Ehret in 12:14.98. Grant-Williams, Shanks, Abigail
Whittemore, and Hickey won the 4x100 with a time of 50.02.
For the
boys' events, it was a given that Madison's Kenan Christon would win the 100,
200, and long jump as he's the section leader in all three. Everyone else was
fighting for second place. Nicholas Dunn, in a very close finish with Madison's
Jaden Dir, placed second in the 100 with a time of 11.22 to Dir's time of
11.24. Christon's winning time was a speedy 10.78. In the 200 Christon won with
a time of 21.79 followed by Dir in 23.26 and Dunn in 23.29. Other Coronado
finishers in the 100 were Shane Alihan (11.74), (Leo Adams (11.94), Jesse
Vernallis (12.35), Colton Cline (12.42),
Caffrey Oden (12.89), and Nicholas Lee. Our other finishers in the 200 were
Kainoa Potter (25.00) and Anthony Escobedo (27.95).
Coronado's
Ian Hurburt is the Section Leader in the 800-meter run, but for this meet, he
ran the 400 and both the 4X100 and 4x400 relays for a bit of speed work. He
easily won the 400 in 51.32 with Max Fuller placing third in 54.19 and Kainoa
Potter finishing sixth. The 4x400 was a close race with Fuller leading off,
followed by Chris Russell, then Luke Klingenberg on the third leg. When Ian got
the baton, we had a two second lead over Madison with Mission Bay out of
contention. Then Ian ran 50.3 for the anchor leg to put it away with a time of
3:36.98 to Madison's 3:40.52. The 4x100,
with Madison's Christon and Dir in the mix, and for us Dunn, Alihan, Fuller,
and Hurlburt was close and fast. Christian made the difference for Madison, and
they won with a time of 43.84 to our 44.30. Mission Bay was over four seconds
back. In addition to the 4x400, Klingenberg won the 1600 in 4:45.70 and the
3200 in 10:23.98. Brad Busby placed third in the 1600 with 4:51.47 followed by
Danny Mineo (4:53.62), and Chris Russell. Mineo placed fourth in the 3200. Our
lone hurdler, Jack Miller placed second in the 110 hurdles and seventh in the
300 hurdles. In the jumps, Liam Casey won the high jump with 5-10 followed by
Kobuk Van Houten with 5-6 in fourth. Van Houten also placed fourth in the long
jump with 18-9 followed by Casey in sixth with 17-2, and Nick Lee in 13th.
Santiago Giraut placed 6th in the triple jump with 31-5. In the throws, Hayden
Dunlap won the shot put with 37 feet followed by Joe Whalen in third with 35-5,
Nate Kim in ninth with 31-11, Andrew Needham in tenth with 29-3, and Jack
Weisbrod in twelth with 27-0. Weisbrod
was our top discus thrower with 89-5 for sixth place. He was followed by
Needham in seventh with 88-7, Kim in ninth with 79-0, and Whalen in eleventh
with 74-7. Our next meet is the league finals this Friday at Madison High
school starting at 3:30.
