16 March 2019 : UC Classic and Coronado-Lincoln-Crawford scrimmage

The track team participated in two events this week, a scrimmage with Crawford and Lincoln on Thursday, and the Inaugural University City Track Classic on Saturday.  We went to the U.C. Classic because they offered a lot of divisions. There were Freshmen and Sophomore, as well as Open and Invite divisions for nearly every event.  This worked well for us because we have a lot of new athletes, as well as a few at a more advanced level. Our top performer of the day, Alysah Hickey, had a banner day. She won the 100-meter dash, the Long Jump, and the High Jump. But, winning three of four events is old hat for her. What made the day special was the quality of the two jumps. In the long jump, each competitor was allowed four jumps, and Alysah fouled on her first two while Kalani Hardyway from Ocenside High School soared out to a commanding lead of 19 feet 3/4 inch, which briefly put her in possession of the top Long Jump mark so far this season in San Diego. It was a short-lived title, as Alysah cleared 20 feet 2 inches on her third try, and 20 feet 9 inches on her fourth attempt. Had the wind not been over the 2 meter/sec limit on the 20-9 jump, she would have broken the all-time San Diego Section Long Jump record currently held by Gail Devers. The wind reading for the 20-2 jump was legal. Fifth place in the long jump went to Ruthie Grant-Williams with a mark of 17-2. Ruthie also won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.55 seconds and placed 2nd in the High Jump with a leap of 5 feet 2 inches. In the high jump Alysah finally got the record she's been chasing for the last couple of years. Her height of 5 feet 10.5 inches surpassed Jamie Klages' mark of 5 feet 10.25 inches set in 2005. When that record was set, our high jump coach, Kerry Elders, and I figured it would last for decades. Well it lasted for 1.25 decades.  Alysah's not done. A 6-foot high jump is just around the corner as well as, possibly, a 21-foot long jump. Currently her high jump ranks as first in the nation, and her long jump as the nations' second best. Other overall winners at the meet were Teresa Perez who won the 800-meter run in 2:17.88 followed by Sofia Van Arsdale in third place with a time of 2:20.35. Victoria Perez won the overall discus title with a toss of 117-10.5, and placed second in the shot put with a heave of 32 -05.5.  Madden Hundley placed second in the 1600 with a time of 5:22.02 followed by Abigail Hundley in seventh place. Regina Czerewko placed fourth in the triple jump with a personal record of 30 feet 1 inch. She also joined Sarah Barns, Allison White, and Madden Hundley to finish fourth in the 4x200 relay. Barns, in addition to the 4x200 placed fourth in the 200 with 29.91 and 7th in the 400 with a time of 65-50. Madden and Abigail Hundley, Perez, and Van Arsdale teamed up to place second in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 13:09.06.

For the boys, Shane Alihan clocked 11.97 in the 100, Kainoa Potter ran 24.44 for the 200, Landon Mullins won the boys frosh 1600 with a time of 5:03.19. Brad Busby turned in a 10:17.52 time for the 1600, Jack Weisbrod placed second in the Soph shot with 34-7.5 as well as tossing the discus 84-1 for fourth place in the soph division. In the 4x100 relay Alihan, Potter, Zane Delcore, and Noah Wahamaki teamed up for a seventh place finish in the open division
