2019 Track Season

There's a bit of a gap between this post and my last. Track kind of took up all my free time. That said, this and the posts to come today will be about the track season, taken from my weekly submissions to the Coronado Eagle.
We'll start with my pre-season entry.

Although we haven't had any meets yet,  we have quite a few new kids on the team, I have a pretty good idea about the strength of this year's teams except for the new kids. There are surprises every year and this season is not likely to be any different. Rather than speculate, I'll report the surprises in later articles. We have 24 girls on the team and 31 boys with half being new to the program, so there's a lot to learn about the recruits.  Last year the girls' team easily won the CIF D-II championship, and if we were in D-I, they might have won that as well. The good news is that most of the girls involved in that victory are back for this season, the bad news is that most are seniors so next year will be a rebuilding season. Last year Alysah Hickey had the top mark in the San Diego Section for the 100-meter dash (11.87), the long jump (20' ½"), and the high jump (5' 10").  She was the state champion in the long jump while placing fourth in the high jump. The word "while" in that previous sentence is literal as both events ran at the same time. Alysah holds the school records in the 100, 200, and the Long Jump. In the high jump, her top mark of 5 feet 10 inches is only a quarter of an inch off Jamie Klages' record set in 2005.  She also anchored the school record-setting 4x100 relay team that won the D-II CIF championship with a time of 48.22.  The other member of that team returning this season is Ruthie-Grant-Willams. Ruthie also holds the school record in the 100-meter hurdles (15.50) (and has very respectable marks in both the high jump (5'-5") and the long jump (17'-5").
In the distance events, Teresa Perez holds the school records in the 800 (2:13.38, 1600 (5:03.22), and 2-mile run (11:03.48).  The Hundley sisters had nice performances in the 1600 with Madden clocking 5:07.10 and her frosh sister, Abigail,  running 5:12.91. Two other sophomores to watch this year are Sofia Van Arsdale and Jessica Ehret. Sofia advanced to the CIF finals in the 800 and has a top time of 2:18.96 while Jessica competes in the 3200.
We have only one female thrower,  Victoria Perez, but she went undefeated against league competition in both the shot put and discus, while setting school records in both. Her best shot-put was 34' 7" and her best discus throw was 119'2".
Last season Alysah was named the Field MVP of the year for the San Diego Section. She also received the same award for the League with Teresa being named the Track MVP for the league.
All of the girls mentioned above are back for this season, along with over a dozen more new to the team.
For the boys, our top sprinters are back with Nicholas Dunn leading the way with 11.22 in the 100-meter dash and 23.24 in the 200. He is joined by Shane Alihan, Leo Adams, Jessie Vernalis, Kainoa Potter, and Ryan Meachum.
In the distance events, our top runner is senior Brad Busby, who is joined by Cole Mullins, Landon Mullins, and Connor Jaynes.
It'll be interesting to see how all the new kids fare this season. While the girls' team is strong, the boys are in a rebuilding stage.
